History and Geography of the Isle of Wight

Isle of Wight is a small historical county in England. There are many historical topics associated with this small place that one such topic can be a subject matter to study whether privately or in the colleges. History of the island

If you have to know about the history, than it won’t be a small matter. This island has got a rich historical collection about the place and the local culture. There are different topics available about the history of the place. The discovery of evidences from the archeological sites had produced a lot of facts that accustomed the place. From the findings of the place, like the fossils remains of dinosaur, it has come to the light that the place was pretty much prehistorically alive from the Bronze Age to the Iron Age. Certain artifacts have been discovered which belonged to the Roman Age.

Later on, the name of the island was mentioned in ‘Geography’, a book by Claudius Ptolemaeus in the mid of 2nd Century.

In the later age between 534AD to 1066, the island faced a lot of attacks from many ethnic invaders. The information of these attacks is well recorded in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle Cerdic.

After the Norman Conquest, the island was run by some lords until in 1293 it was fully controlled by Edward 1.

The island was again on the center of attack from the France and the Spanish country. Due to this reason the Carisbrooke Castle had to extend its outer forts.

The royalties of England began to make this island its resting nest. It was during the reign of Queen Victoria that the world’s first ever radio station was set here in the island in 1897.

During the 19th and 20th centuries, a maritime industry was launch in the island and the industry is continuing till date.

Geographical location of the island

This diamond shaped island is located at the center of the southern most part of England. It is thirteen and a quarter miles from north to south and about twenty three miles from east to west. The total area of the island is 94,146 acres including the inland waters. The island has two specific areas, Medina and South Wight. Garden Isle is the popular name given to the island in England because it has got a picturesque landscape. Both inland and costal area of the island are described as the most unspoiled location and it has a rich variety of forest areas, beautiful beaches, and the place is laden with historical villages and commercial market towns.

The center most area is Shide Corner, which is at the south east of Newport and the highest point of the island is St. Boniface Down which is located at Ventnor.

The island has an advantageous climate because of its location and the climate is more favorable than the mainland of England.
